OK … I’m trying to be calm & serene about this development in the senate last week. They were due to vote on a motion to hold an inquiry into the state of captioning in Australia for Deaf & Hearing Impaired. Natasha Stott Despoja was leading the charge to support an inquiry. A few weeks ago I saw the film “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” on TV, what got me thinking was this scene where Ron (the hero in the story) lost his job after a tasteless remark about the inhabitants of San Diego. When he lost his job he became lost, he no longer cared about his appearance (and perhaps his personal hygiene too), and had started to become an alcoholic. A bit like a man when he loses his identity or when he feels he can no longer contribute to society. There is a lot to be said about a man attaching his identity, and his self-worth to his job.
